The tradition and art of scaffolding in continental Croatia have been declared intangible cultural property and enrolled in Register of cultural assets Republic of Croatia.

Thus, a long series of values ​​from the historical treasury was continued with another tradition that we inherited from our ancestors. By registering scaffolding in the national Register, the level of protection is additionally raised intangible asset from Međimurje from the list of cultural assets of Croatia.

Yesterday, a press conference and an appropriate ceremony were held in Skelarska hiža in Sveti Martin na Mura, where a new achievement in the domain of culture of Međimurje was presented, an achievement in which the long-term and dedicated work of many guardians of tradition was woven.

"These are 17 treasures of our region, 17 traditions and 17 immeasurable values ​​for us. Identity is preserved by nurturing culture and history, and we have been doing this successfully for years. Scaffolding was not so long ago a way of life for our ancestors, and by entering this tradition and skill in the Register, the municipality of Sveti Martin na Muri and the entire Gornjo Međimurje area gains a lot because the value of this exceptional tourist attraction also increases., said the prefect, and added that every corner of Međimurje preserves some treasures from ancient times for new generations and proudly shows them to visitors.

Director of the Tourist Board of Međimurje County Rudi Grula says that Međimurje, in relation to the number of inhabitants, has the most protected intangible cultural assets in Croatia or is at the very top.

"This speaks of the richness of tradition and history, of the diligence of our people, but also of their awareness of preserving their treasures. The Tourist Board strives to turn such potentials into a tourist product, and thanks to the Ministry of Culture, which recognized the value of scaffolding along the Mura, the path to this goal is open to us.", emphasized Rudi Grula, thanking the professional services of the Ministry of Culture for carrying out the demanding process of professional processing and protection, without which there would be no registration in the Register.

"The banks of the Mura, connected by scaffolding, were in the past like the Internet: this is where news was exchanged, where people met and had fun, and scaffolding is much more than just crossing the river, which is also sung in the Međimurje song", Rudi Grula also pointed out, and added that Međimurje has seven scaffoldings, thus the highest density in Croatia, and with the support of the Ministry of Transport and the great commitment of local people, scaffolding is still alive today, mostly for tourist and recreational purposes.

In the municipality of Sv. Martin na Mura went one step further and reconstructed Skelarska hiža, which offers tourists an attractive navigation the past.

The host of the ceremony Martin Srša, the head of the Municipality of Sveti Martin na Muri, adds that registration in the Register is an extremely important event for the promotion of the municipality: "The protection of scaffolding as a cultural asset is in a way a thank you to all the people who were engaged in scaffolding in the past and who today protect this craft from oblivion", said the mayor of Srša, adding that the Municipality of Sv. Martin na Mura continuously takes care of the good condition of the two scaffoldings in his area and the safety of people.

The mayors of Belica municipalities also attended the ceremony Zvonimir Taradi, Subturn Perica Hajdarović, and Donje Dubrava Marijan Varga, as well as representatives of Međimurje LAGs and numerous associations.

17 intangible cultural assets from Međimurje

The entry of a new intangible cultural asset from Međimurje into the national Register is an opportunity to remind ourselves of all the values ​​that have been born from our region or are part of the traditional treasures of northwestern Croatia.

In addition to glassmaking, the intangible cultural heritage of Međimurje is also the Međimurje chant, the medicine craft, the Kotorip speech group, St. Mary's toponymy, Štrigov speech group, traditional pottery, then the art of making lace in the area of ​​St. Mary, the art of making traditional toys, as well as the art of playing the dulcimer, making the Pikač carnival mask in Selnica, making traditional Christmas nativity scenes, Christmas jewelry, so-called kinch, and the Christmas chandelier, the art of playing the farkašica tambourine, goldsmithing in Međimurje and making black Easter eggs, and twinning and sistering in Donja Dubrava.
