The European Commission has launched a tender for European Smart Tourism Capital 2022.
This initiative rewards European cities for outstanding, innovative and sustainable tourism practices. The initiative aims to strengthen the innovative development of tourism in European cities and their surroundings and increase their attractiveness for better economic growth and job creation. The initiative aims to promote smart tourism in the EU, network cities and facilitate the exchange of examples of good practice.
Cities are asked to demonstrate their innovative tourism practices in four areas: accessibility, sustainability, digitization, cultural heritage and creativity.
The competition is open to cities across the EU, as well as non-EU countries participating in the COSME program (Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom) .
Cities with more than 100 inhabitants can apply, and in countries where there is no city with more than 000 inhabitants, the city with the largest population can apply.
The competition is open in April 2021, and the application deadline is June 16, 2021.
During the pre-selection phase, all eligible applications will be evaluated on the basis of a set of criteria established by independent experts. Based on their assessment, the Commission will organize a shortlist of a maximum of 7 cities, which will be invited to present their candidacy to the European Jury, and which will select two European smart tourism capitals for 2022.
The awarding of the title of European Capital of Smart Tourism is an initiative funded by the COSME program, and was established at the suggestion of the European Parliament. Applications can be made through the website SmartTourismCapital.eu
