UN Tourism and the World Alliance for Sustainable Hospitality will work to implement a joint Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) framework for the tourism sector.

An ESG framework for tourism companies, developed by UN Tourism in collaboration with the University of Oxford SDG Impact Lab, aims to help businesses across the sector more consistently and reliably measure and report on their sustainability efforts and impacts.

With this new agreement, UN Tourism will work together with the Alliance to test the Framework, improve its indicators and relevant tools, and encourage stakeholder engagement.

"The ESG Framework for Tourism Businesses is set to transform the tourism sector by establishing harmonized and essential standards for companies to assess and report on their sustainability efforts. Collaboration between UN Tourism and the World Alliance for Sustainable Hospitality highlights how commitment and strategic partnerships can drive alignment and meaningful progress in ESG", said the executive director of UN Tourism, Zoritsa Urosevic

The partnership comes at a time when tourism businesses face increasing pressure to disclose their ESG activities and impacts.

The ESG framework for tourism companies is rooted in the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (SF-MST), approved by the UN Statistical Commission with the unanimous support of all 193 UN member states, and seeks to bring greater and much-needed alignment between private sector data and the public sector.

In addition, the Alliance's Net Positive Hospitality Pathway and Framework is designed to align metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs), develop standards and streamline reporting within the hospitality industry.

"Cooperation with UN Tourism on the development of a harmonized ESG framework represents a significant milestone for the global tourism industry. This partnership not only underscores our commitment to sustainability, but also highlights the industry's collective power to drive meaningful change By establishing standardized metrics and fostering greater alignment between the private and public sectors - we are paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for tourism worldwide", he said Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance.
