With the entry of the Republic of Croatia into the Schengen area, border control at crossings with the Republic of Slovenia was abolished. Since until now border control slowed down the flow of road traffic, with the abolition of the control, an additional increase in the intensity of traffic entering the A1 highway in Lučki is expected.

For this reason, Croatian highways (HAC) proceeded to improve the throughput Lučko node within the framework of the existing dimensions of the highway.

It is planned to make it easier through new solutions traffic flow and reduce congestion on the section of the A1 Zagreb - Split - Ploče highway, and especially in the approach to Lučko National Park in the direction of the sea, Croatian highways point out.

First of all, in the area of the Lučko junction, traffic management will be ensured continuously with two traffic lanes from the direction of Slovenia towards the south, instead of the current one traffic lane, and this is the location of the descending branch towards Lučko - direction Rijeka/Split (picture 1 existing state and picture 2 new state).

This will contribute  more even distribution of traffic flows in the direction of the sea and will certainly decrease waiting to join the traffic lane at the approach to Lučko NP zone, according to Hrvatske Autoceste.

Also, the number of lanes has been increased from 3 to 4 lanes in the area approaching the tollbooths.

The dynamic management of the toll gates will eliminate the situation of intertwining traffic in peak hours, for example when the ENC user is in the far left lane, he will no longer have to look for an ENC lane, but will be able to use any lane for the passage. Following this, the passing of s  By using the ENC device and downloading the manual payment card, it will be enabled at all entrance toll lanes, which will be opened depending on the traffic demand to the south, but also to the north, the HAC further explains.

Although these measures will not solve all the problems due to the limited capacity of the Lučko - Bosiljevo section itself, especially behind the toll booth, it is still expected that the positive effects will be visible through the reduction of the length of the queue on the Zagreb ring road.

It is also expected that the queues of vehicles waiting for tolls, which extend to the ring road, will form later and spend earlier (shorter waiting time in the queue).

This will contribute to increased traffic safety on the ring road and in the area of the Lučko intersection, and savings in time lost in traffic jams are also expected, Croatian Motorways point out and add: "The aim of these measures is to optimize the throughput of all directions arriving at the Lučko toll station. This also  with the new solution, it wants to ensure the safety of all road users and to reduce time losses for users due to crowds and stoppages on this important section of the highway. With adherence to the speed limit and the caution and cooperation of all road users, it is possible to achieve safe and efficient traffic on the section of the highway from Zagreb to the Bosiljevo intersection, which will make it much easier for our citizens and foreign tourists to travel to tourist destinations."
