The Fortress of Culture is the largest EU project approved so far

The funds go to the construction of the tunnel on St. Ivan and investing in sustainability

The GIFTSnet project, the largest EU project approved so far for the Šibenik Fortress of Culture, worth a total of 2,2 million euros, was presented today at the Barone Fortress. The project was presented by the director of Fortress Culture Gorana Barišić Bačelić, the head of the Department for International Cooperation and Projects Đurđa Vrljević Šarić, the head of the Department for Research and Interpretation of Heritage Josip Pavić and the Mayor of Šibenik Željko Burić.
 
The value of the project is a total of 2.244.450,66 euros, the partners of Tvrđava kulture on the project are the City of Karlovac, the Municipality of Ulcinj, the Municipality of Bar, the City of Banja Luka and the City of Trebinje, and it is financed from the Interreg IPA cross-border cooperation program Croatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Montenegro .

"As a team, we are celebrating the tenth year of activity, two days separate us from the third Night of the Fortress, and it was precisely in these days ten years ago that we held the first media presentation when we announced the opening and the program at St. Mihovil Fortress. However, today we gathered on the occasion of a European projects are a natural state, and I am referring to the revitalization of the St. Michael's Fortress to say that we participated in and implemented as many as seven EU projects, the financial value of which was 2 million euros for the Fortress of Culture alone", she said in the introduction Gorana Barišić Bačelić.

Đurđa Vrljević Šarić pointed out that only five out of a total of 56 nominated projects were financed within the specific goal 4.6. Tourism and culture in the 1st call of the Interreg IPA cross-border cooperation program Croatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Montenegro. GIFTSnet, she added, will contribute to improving the sustainable and inclusive development of cultural tourism by implementing green, sustainable investments in Šibenik, Karlovac, Banja Luka, Trebinje, Bar and Ulcinj.

"We designed, developed and submitted the project within our Institution. We are happy that it was approved, and the success of the GIFTSnet project application once again confirms the innovation and relevance of our ideas for the development of cultural tourism.", said the head of the Department for International Cooperation and Projects.

The Šibenik Fortress of Culture plans to finance the introduction of a smart recycling system at the Fortress of St. Mihovila, Fortress Barone and Fortress St. Ivan, as well as the arrangement of the tunnel at the Fortress of St. Ivan. Also, as part of the project, the "Night of Fortresses Goes Green" initiative will be launched, which as an international cultural manifestation will become a tool for promoting green standards and encouraging public awareness of the principles of sustainable development.

"The large number of visitors and activities at the fortresses increases the production of waste at the locations. This problem has been partially solved through the Šibenik Zero Waste project, and will be upgraded by purchasing and installing smart recycling containers at the three fortresses and by purchasing and installing a smart biocomposter on the campus of the Fortress of St. In addition, as part of the investment, the greening of the St. John's Fortress is planned., she stressed Vrljevic Saric.

The second part of the investment in Šibenik relates to the construction of the tunnel at the Fortress of St. Ivan and its inclusion in the tourist offer of the Fortress, and the investment is worth around 320 thousand euros. Josip Pavić pointed out today that it is the first bunker in the area of ​​Šibenik that will receive a new interpretation.

"The tunnel is entered from the north side of the fortress, where there used to be a playground. It was built during the German occupation as a shelter and ends with a bunker located on the south side of the fortress. It goes down very deep and the interior looks powerful and provides a special experience as soon as you enter We were careful about what kind of content we went in with and we had a very good solution that will cause a reaction from the visitors next summer. with the funds of this project, we will create documentation that will enable the future commissioning of the eastern tower at St. Michael's Fortress.", Pavić said at the press conference.

Mayor Željko Burić congratulated the Fortress of Culture on the new project and said that this is another proof of how good the decision of the City of Šibenik was to establish the Fortress of Culture.

"The restored fortresses have become the brand of contemporary and modern Šibenik, which is now perceived as a city of fortresses. What we all enjoy is the fact that after all these years the fortresses look as good as the first day they were restored. All this presented today is not a coincidence but a result The work of the Fortress Culture team with the support of the City of Šibenik will be completed when we connect the fortress of St. Michael with the cable car., the mayor concluded Željko Burić.

GIFTSnet is the fourth EU project currently in the implementation of the Šibenik Culture Fortress. The FORTIC project from the Interreg Italy - Croatia program is worth more than 2,135 million euros, of which the budget of the Sibenik Fortress of Culture is about 250.000 euros, while 60.000 euros of grants were approved under the Erasmus+ program, Small partnerships for the field of adult education, for the Sustain4Seniors Hub project, whose holder of the Šibenik Fortress of Culture. In addition, the Zlarin Coral Center is part of the project Sustainable Islands - Small European islands mobilized for sustainability development of their territory worth 60 thousand euros, which has been implemented since this year in partnership with the organization SMILO. Through these projects, the Fortress of Culture Šibenik secured over one million euros in funds for investments in localities, development of new contents and programs, and strengthening of the institution's human capacities.
