Tourism, one of the most important economic activities in the Republic of Croatia, has a great impact on the environment, which is especially pronounced through the increase in the amount of waste generated during the tourist season. Environmental pollution in tourist areas is a common problem due to the large number of people, but also due to the increased volume of various activities.
Improper disposal of waste from hotels and resorts leads not only to environmental pollution, but also to health problems related to pests and infectious diseases. The contribution of food waste emissions to global warming is almost equal to global emissions from road traffic, and every 1000 guests in a typical restaurant generates an average of about 200 kilograms of waste.
Obstacle and misunderstanding of entrepreneurs in tourism for this issue is also an obstacle to sustainable waste management, due to the still generally accepted opinion that the most important thing is big profit, and environmental protection is only in the last place.
Fortunately, this perception is slowly changing, so there are more and more examples of corporate social responsibility and investment in environmental protection in the tourism sector, all in line with the objectives of EU policy and national waste management policy, ie its reduction at source.
Zagreb company last recognized the opportunity and decided to offer and place on the Croatian market devices for decomposition of food waste, and recently distributed devices ORCA digester Canadian company Minus Global International, as well as BMD digester devices of the American company Bottle Model Digester LLC.
The devices are intended to prevent the generation and accumulation of biowaste, so their procurement reduces the amount of this type of waste in landfills, which contributes to efficient management.
