The Central Bureau of Statistics conducted a survey of travel by domestic and foreign tourists organized by Croatian travel agencies, in which covered 1.167 Croatian travel agencies and their branches who organized multi-day trips or mediated the sale and implementation of package deals or one-day trips for domestic and foreign visitors and tourists in 2021.

Organized travel in 2021 was limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Croatia and around the world, which affected tourists and their overnight stays organized by Croatian travel agencies.

In 2021, domestic tourists mostly traveled in Croatia, and less to foreign countries

In 2021, organized by Croatian travel agencies, 280 thousand domestic tourists were on multi-day trips in Croatia, where they realized 1,1 million overnight stays, which is 74,5% more domestic tourists and 75,1% more overnight stays compared to In 2020, compared to 2019, the number of domestic tourists traveling in Croatia decreased by 26,2%, and the number of their overnight stays decreased by 22,1%. In 2021, domestic tourists, organized by Croatian travel agencies in Croatia, spent an average of four nights.

Organized by Croatian travel agencies, 44 domestic tourists traveled to foreign countries, where they spent 172 nights. Domestic tourists mostly traveled to Italy (14,1%), followed by trips to Turkey (9,1%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (8,5%), Hungary (6%), Slovenia (5,4%), France and Germany (both 4,7%), Austria (3%), the United Arab Emirates (2,7%) and the United States and Spain (both 2,4%).

They traveled to foreign countries by 15,6% and realized 16,3% fewer overnight stays compared to 2020. Domestic tourists realized an average of four overnight stays in foreign countries. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic tourists traveling to foreign countries decreased by 87%, and the number of their overnight stays decreased by 86,2%.

Domestic visitors on day trips mostly in Croatia, and from foreign countries to Bosnia and Herzegovina

In 2021, Croatian travel agencies organized one-day trips for 100 domestic visitors, of which 93 domestic visitors on one-day trips to Croatia. Domestic visitors organized by Croatian travel agencies on day trips to foreign countries mostly traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina (41,4%), Italy (20,5%), Hungary (18,3%), Slovenia (14,8%) , Serbia (2,9%) and Austria (2,1%).

In 2021, compared to 2020, the number of domestic visitors on one-day trips in Croatia organized by Croatian travel agencies increased by 125,7%, while their number on trips to foreign countries increased by 11,2%. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic visitors in Croatia decreased by 64,8%, while their number on trips to foreign countries decreased by 92,8%.

Traditionally, in the organization of Croatian travel agencies, most tourists came from Germany

Last year, Croatian travel agencies organized multi-day trips to Croatia for 1,2 million foreign tourists, who spent 8,1 million nights. With the easing of epidemiological measures in Croatia and the world in 2021, organized by Croatian travel agencies, there were 100,5% more foreign tourists who realized 99,5% more overnight stays. Nevertheless, compared to 2019, foreign tourists had 54,9% fewer arrivals and 49,9% fewer overnight stays. In 2021, foreign tourists organized by Croatian travel agencies in Croatia spent an average of seven nights.

In the structure of overnight stays of foreign tourists who came to Croatia in the organization of Croatian travel agencies, most overnight stays were realized by tourists from Germany (39,6%). This is followed by overnight stays of tourists from Austria (8%), Poland (7,5%), Slovenia (7,4%), the Czech Republic (7%), the United Kingdom (6,2%), Hungary and the Netherlands (both 2,8 %), Slovakia (2,6%) and Italy (2,5%). All these countries achieved an increase in overnight stays in 2021 compared to 2020.

Domestic tourists traveled mostly by bus in Croatia and spent most nights in hotels

Domestic tourists, at least in terms of travel organized by Croatian travel agencies, traveled mostly by bus in Croatia (81,6%), while on trips to foreign countries they traveled mostly by plane (62,1%). Domestic tourists spent the most nights in hotels, 531 thousand overnight stays, which is 48,9% of the total number of overnight stays of domestic tourists in Croatia organized by Croatian travel agencies.

Unlike domestic tourists, foreign tourists spent the most nights in rooms, apartments, studio apartments and holiday homes, 4,3 million overnight stays, which is 53,6% of the total overnight stays of foreign tourists in Croatia organized by Croatian travelers agency.
