The route is perfect for a weekend trip as the train passes through 3 countries and 8 settlements within two hours.

It is a new version of the route that was closed more than 30 years ago and has now been revived. The railway on which the train travels was built more than 150 years ago - during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Affordable tickets from 8 euros in one direction they are a great lure for rail-loving travelers. The train departs from Trieste, crosses the border and enters Slovenia, where it stops at four stations - Sežana, Divača, Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica.

If you like cycling, you can stop in Ilirska Bistrica and rent e-bikes to ride the forest trails of this region.

The train then crosses into Croatia where it stops in Šapjane and Matulji before stopping at its final destination - Rijeka - a port city rich in buildings from the Habsburg era and a theater from the 19th century whose ceiling was painted by Gustav Klimt.

The line departs at 7:50 a.m. from Villa Opičina station in the suburbs of Trieste. It stops in Ilirska Bistrica at 8:54, and arrives in Rijeka at 9:54. In the return direction, the train departs from Rijeka at 18:25 and arrives at Villa Opičina at 20:40.

Individual tickets for adults for the entire trip start at 8 euros, however, tickets can also be purchased by sections if you want to get off the train and enjoy individual destinations. For now, this service is planned until September 30th, but there is hope that the route will become permanent.

The establishment of a new direct train takes place in cooperation Slovenian Railways, passenger traffic of Croatian Railways and the Italian project partner, as part of the European project SUSTANCE Interreg Central Europe.
