"Honey of the Croatian Coast" received institutional protection of authenticity, which is the result of many years of efforts and activities to give sage honey, originating from a very specific area of the Croatian Coast, the importance it deserves.
The persistence of the 'Association of Sage Honey Producers' from Omišalj on the island of Krk came to the fore. Led by the president, Mirko Almaši, the members of this active beekeeping association have proven that institutional and administrative obstacles can be overcome with persistent work.
This achieved a great joint success of Croatian beekeepers from three Adriatic counties: Primorsko-Goranska, Lika-Senj and Zadar. With the approval of the transitional national protection of the name 'Honey of the Croatian coast', the second step, the protection procedure at the European level, begins.
"Honey of the Croatian coast" is honey produced by bees of the autochthonous breed of gray bees from the dominant nectar of the honey-bearing plant species sage that grows in the Croatian coast. This name refers to sage honey with its synonyms kush and nightingale.
It is dominated by the nectar of the mentioned plant species, with associated melissopalinol, sensory and physico-chemical properties. It is the only protected honey in the Republic of Croatia that has the adjective 'Croatian' in its protected name.
Hrvatsko primorye is the historical name for the area of Rijeka to the south of Karlobag. More precisely to the village of Tribanj, St. Marija Magdalena (formerly Mandalina) in the Velebit foothills, where it borders Dalmatia.
The province of Croatian littoral is different from the name Croatian littoral, which refers to the entire littoral that belongs to the Republic of Croatia.
The name Hrvatsko primorje was created in response to the term Austro-Hungarian coast when the mentioned area was Croatia's only outlet to the sea and it also included the islands of Cres, Mali Lošinj, Krk, Rab and Pag.
After the official publication of the Notice on the submitted Request for Name Protection (Official Gazette, No. 92/2024) and the expiration of the prescribed period, the legal conditions for the adoption of the Decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries were met.
On September 11, 2024, it issued the Decision on the transitional national protection of the name 'Honey of the Croatian coast - Protected designation of origin'. As previously stated, this starts the second step, the procedure protection of originality at the EU level.
