According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2023, commercial accommodation facilities achieved 19,5 million arrivals and 92,4 million overnight stays tourists, which is 9,7% more tourist arrivals and 2,6% more overnight stays compared to 2022. Compared to the record tourist In 2019, there were 0,4% fewer arrivals, but 1,2% more tourist overnight stays.

In the structure of total realized tourist arrivals, 86,5% are foreign arrivals, and 13,5% domestic tourists. Domestic tourists had 7,6% more arrivals, and foreign tourists had 10% more arrivals in 2023 compared to 2022. In the structure of total tourist overnight stays, 91,2% were made by foreign tourists, and 8,8% by domestic tourists tourists. In 2023, compared to 2022, domestic tourists had 4,7% more overnight stays, and foreign tourists had 2,4% more overnight stays.

Compared to 2019, domestic tourists achieved an increase in arrivals by 19,2% and an increase in overnight stays by 14,4%. Foreign tourists had 2,9% fewer arrivals, while overnight stays by foreign tourists remained at the same level in 2023 compared to 2019.

Tourists from Germany achieved the most arrivals and overnight stays of foreign tourists in 2023, and 3,2 million arrivals and 22,3 million overnight stays, which is 19% of the total realized arrivals of foreign tourists and 26,5% of the total realized overnight stays of foreign tourists. Compared to 2022, tourists from Germany had 2,3% fewer arrivals and 5,2% fewer overnight stays. Compared to the record 2019, they achieved 11,3% more arrivals and 12,0% more overnight stays.

They are followed by overnight stays by tourists from Slovenia and Austria (9,1% each), Poland (7,5%), the Czech Republic (5,9%), Italy (4,7%) and the United Kingdom (4,1%). The nights spent by tourists from the mentioned countries together make up 66,9% of the total nights spent by foreign tourists. All the listed countries achieved an increase in tourist overnight stays in 2023 compared to 2022, except for Germany and the Czech Republic, which had 9% fewer overnight stays.

Turisti from Asian countries, they achieved 1,1 million overnight stays, which is a significant increase in overnight stays in 2023 compared to 2022, by 81,2%. The most overnight stays by tourists from Asian countries were achieved by the Republic of Korea with 200 thousand overnight stays, and Continental China with 159 thousand overnight stays, which accounts for 33,4% of the total overnight stays by tourists from Asian countries.

The Istrian county with the highest number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays

In the County of Istria, the highest number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays was achieved in 2023, namely 4,8 million arrivals (which accounts for 24,8% of the total realized arrivals) and 28,1 million overnight stays (which accounts for 30,4% of the total realized overnight stays in commercial accommodation). Compared to 2022, the Istrian County saw 5,4% more arrivals and 1,6% more tourist overnight stays. The pre-pandemic result was surpassed and 7,8% more arrivals and 6,6% more tourist overnights were achieved in 2023 compared to 2019.

The County of Istria is followed by the County of Split-Dalmatia with 3,6 million arrivals and 17,8 million overnight stays and the County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar with 3,1 million arrivals and 15,6 million overnight stays. In both counties, there were more tourist arrivals and overnight stays compared to 2022.

As in 2022, the most overnight stays by foreign tourists in the County of Istria were made by tourists from Germany (38,8%), Austria (14,2%), Slovenia (9,2%), Italy (6,3%) and the Netherlands (5,6 .3,8%). All the mentioned countries achieved an increase in tourist overnight stays, except for Germany, which achieved 6,9% fewer tourist overnight stays, and the Netherlands, which had XNUMX% fewer overnight stays.

It's traditional the most overnight stays by tourists in the County of Istria were achieved in the Campsites and camping areas group, and 11,2 million overnight stays, which is 39,9% of the total overnight stays by tourists in the County of Istria. Tourist overnight stays in the group of Resorts and similar short-stay facilities follow with 9,1 million overnight stays, which is 32,3% of the total overnight stays in the County of Istria. In the Hotels and similar accommodation group, 7,8 million overnight stays by tourists were realized, which accounts for 27,7% of all overnight stays realized in the County of Istria. In 2023, compared to 2022, there was an increase in overnight stays by tourists in the Camps and camping areas group, by 1,8%, and in the Hotels and similar accommodation group, by 3,7%, while in the Resorts and similar facilities group, there was a shorter holiday was for 0,4% fewer tourist nights.

The city with the highest number of tourist nights in 2023 is Rovinj

In 2023, the cities with the most tourist overnight stays in commercial accommodation facilities are: Rovinj with 4,1 million overnight stays, Dubrovnik with 3,8 million overnight stays and Porec with 3,2 million overnight stays. Compared to 2022, all the mentioned cities saw an increase in tourist overnight stays, and compared to 2019, an increase in tourist overnight stays was achieved by Rovinj, by 6,6%, and Poreč, by 1,8%, while in Dubrovnik, the number of overnight stays tourists decreased by 11,4%.

Domestic tourists spent the most nights in the City of Zagreb, and foreigners in Rovinj

In 2023, domestic tourists spent the most overnight stays in the City of Zagreb, Crikvenica, Zadar, Vodice, Mali Lošinj, Rovinj and Biograd na Moru (which accounts for 23,2% of the total overnight stays of domestic tourists). Foreign tourists spent the most nights in Rovinj, Dubrovnik, Poreč, Split, Medulin and Umag (which accounts for 21,9% of the total overnight stays by foreign tourists).

The group of Resorts and similar facilities for short vacations achieved the most overnight stays

In 2023, the most overnight stays by tourists were realized in the group of Resorts and similar facilities for short vacations, 46 million, which is 49,8% of the total overnight stays. Compared to 2022, the number of overnight stays by tourists in this group of accommodation is 0,9% higher, and compared to 2019, the number of overnight stays by tourists is 0,3% lower. 

The following are the overnight stays of tourists realized in the Hotels and similar accommodation group, in which 24,7 million overnight stays were realized, which is 26,8% of the total realized tourist overnight stays in 2023. Compared to 2022, in the Hotels and similar accommodation group, tourist overnight stays more is by 7,3%, while compared to 2019, the number of overnight stays by tourists is 4,6% less.

In the group of Resorts and similar facilities for short vacations, in 2023 there were 268 rooms and apartments available to tourists (which makes up 61% of the total number of available rooms and apartments) with 712 permanent beds (which makes up 61,9% of the total available permanent beds.

In the Hotels and similar accommodation group, there were 82 rooms and apartments available to tourists (which makes up 18,8% of the total number of available rooms and apartments) with 173 permanent beds (which makes up 15% of the total number of available permanent beds). Average occupancy rooms in 2023 was 57,9%, and permanent beds 57,7%, while in 2022, the average occupancy of rooms was 55,0%, and permanent beds 55,4%.

Tourists in the age group up to 14 achieved the most overnight stays

In 2023, tourists in the age group up to 14 years had the most overnight stays, 17,2 million, which makes 18,6% of total overnight stays. They are followed by tourists in the age group of 35 to 44 years with 16,2 million overnight stays, which is 17,5% of the total overnight stays.
