In the structure of total tourist overnight stays, 92,7% are overnight stays by foreign tourists, and 7,3% overnight stays by domestic tourists. In June 2024, domestic tourists spent an average of 3,1 and foreign tourists 4,6 overnight stays upon arrival, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
Domestic tourists achieved 294 thousand arrivals and 910 thousand overnight stays in June 2024, which is an increase in arrivals by 2,1% and an increase in overnight stays by 0,6% compared to June 2023. In June 2024, foreign tourists achieved 2,5 million arrivals and 11,6 million overnight stays, which compared to June 2023 is an increase in arrivals by 3,5%, and a decrease in overnight stays by 5,4%.
If we look at the level of the first half of the year, in the first six months of 2024 there were 6,9 million arrivals and 24,8 million tourist overnight stays in commercial accommodation facilities, which is an increase in arrivals by 7,9% and an increase in tourist overnight stays by 3,3% compared to the same period in 2023.
32,1% fewer overnight stays by tourists from Germany
In June 2024, tourists from Germany achieved the most arrivals and overnight stays of foreign tourists, namely 382 thousand arrivals and 2,5 million overnight stays, which accounts for 15,1% of the total realized arrivals and 21,6% of the total realized overnight stays of foreign tourists in Croatia. They spent the most nights in the counties of Istria and Primorje-Gorski Kotar, where they had a total of 1,8 million overnight stays, which is 69,8% of the total overnight stays of German tourists in Croatia. But compared to June 2023, tourists from Germany achieved 19,4% fewer arrivals and 32,1% fewer overnight stays. Fewer tourist overnight stays from Germany were realized in all counties, thus in the County of Istria they were realized by 33,5%, and in Primorje-Gorski Kotar by 34,2%.
They are followed by overnight stays by tourists from Austria (10,4%), Poland (10,0%), Slovenia (9,8%), the Czech Republic (6,8%), the United Kingdom (5,4%), Italy (3,7 %) and Hungary (3,3%). Compared to June 2023, there were fewer overnight stays by tourists from Austria (6,0% less), Italy (10,0% less) and Hungary (4,3% less), while an increase in overnight stays was achieved from the other mentioned countries.
The largest number of tourist nights was achieved in the group of Resorts and similar facilities for short vacations
In the group of Resorts and similar facilities for short vacations, the most tourist overnights were realized in June 2024, namely 5,9 million, which is 46,9% of the total realized overnights. In this group of accommodation, there were 5,0% fewer overnight stays compared to June 2023.
The following are the overnight stays of tourists realized in the Hotels and similar accommodation group, namely 3,5 million overnight stays, which is 27,6% of the total realized overnight stays. In this group of accommodation, there were 0,4% more overnight stays compared to June 2023. According to the size of the accommodation facilities and with regard to the number of rooms in this group, the most overnight stays of tourists were made in large accommodation facilities (hotels and similar accommodation facilities with 100 or more rooms), namely 2,7 million overnight stays, which is 77,4% of overnight stays by tourists from the total overnight stays of tourists in the Hotels and similar accommodation group.
3,2 million overnight stays were realized in the Camps and camping sites group, which is 25,5% of the total overnight stays. Compared to June 2023, 10,3% fewer overnight stays were realized in this group of accommodation.
Foreign tourists spent the most nights in Rovinj
Foreign tourists spent the most overnight stays in the first summer month of 2024 in Rovinj - Rovigno, with 608 thousand overnight stays. Compared to June 2023, foreign tourists spent 10,5% less overnight stays in Rovinj. The most overnight stays by foreign tourists in Rovinj – Rovigno were made by tourists from Germany, 213 thousand overnight stays, which makes up 35,0% of the total overnight stays by foreign tourists in Rovinj. Crikvenica, the town with the most overnight stays by domestic tourists
Domestic tourists spent the most overnight stays in Crikvenica in June 2024, with 44 overnight stays, which is 22,0% of the overnight stays of domestic tourists in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Compared to June 2023, domestic tourists spent fewer nights in Crikvenica, by 7,5%. In the Hotels and similar accommodation group, 80 rooms and apartments with 169 permanent beds were available to tourists. The average occupancy of rooms in June 2024 was 68,3%, and 69,4% of permanent beds.
Tourists aged 55 to 64 spent the most nights
In June 2024, tourists between the ages of 55 and 64 spent the most overnight stays, 2,1 million (which is 16,9% of the total overnight stays). In the structure of their overnight stays, 95,2% were made by foreign tourists, while 4,8% were made by domestic tourists.
In the first half of 2024, 3,3% more overnight stays by tourists were achieved compared to the same period in 2023.

The most overnight stays by foreign tourists were made by tourists from Germany (5,4 million overnight stays, which is 24,4% of the total overnight stays by foreign tourists). They are followed by overnight stays by tourists from Austria (10,7%), Slovenia (9,9%), Poland (7,7%), the United Kingdom (5,6%), the Czech Republic (4,4%), Italy (3,6 %) and the USA (3,3%). All the mentioned countries achieved an increase in tourist overnight stays in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, except for Germany and Italy. Tourists from Germany had 10,8% less overnight stays, and tourists from Italy had 4,5% fewer overnight stays.
In the first six months of 2024, 31,9% of total overnight stays by tourists were realized in the County of Istria
In the first half of 2024, Istria County saw the highest number of overnight stays by tourists, 7,9 million, which is almost a third of all overnight stays in Croatia (31,9%). It is followed by the Split-Dalmatia County with 4,3 million tourist overnight stays, which is 17,4% of the total tourist overnight stays in Croatia, and the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County with 3,8 million tourist overnight stays, which is 15,5% of the total overnight stays of tourists in Croatia. Of the mentioned counties, only Split-Dalmatia County saw an increase in overnight stays, by 7,2%, while the number of overnight stays fell in Istria and Primorje-Gorski Kotar counties, by 1,3% in Istria, and by 2,7% in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. 2024% in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in XNUMX.
