The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is organizing an online panel discussion "Challenges and opportunities for the development of SMART tourism in Croatia"

This year was challenging for all of us, but Croatia achieved a summer season with results above expectations. We can thank the good crisis management at the beginning of the pandemic, adherence to epidemiological measures and recommendations of all tourism workers, but also the exceptional adaptability and innovation of the entire tourism sector.

Croatia is recognized as a leader in many innovative trends in tourism. From the world-award-winning eVisitor check-in and check-out system to the Safe Tourist Season project, in which visitors to Croatia were guarded by members of the police from more than seventeen countries.

Numerous projects have been launched at the national and local levels, which are excellent examples of promoting sustainability, cooperation of stakeholders in tourism, human resources development and digitalization in the tourism sector that raise the quality of Croatian tourism, bring destinations closer to interested visitors and make Croatia recognizable in the world.

Mali Lošinj, for example, is an example of world sustainability practice, crowned with the European Commission's award for sustainable development. Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Krk are working on the concept of developing smart cities through the establishment of digital public services and applications, and the trend continues to other destinations.

There are many examples, but the project of the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Enter Croatia is especially worth mentioning, which in the challenging times of the Covid 19 pandemic are joint efforts to increase the efficiency of crossing the border and familiarize visitors with epidemiological measures. After all the above, achievements and projects aimed at the habits of each visitor, the question arises, what kind of tourism awaits us after the end of the pandemic caused by COVID 19. An online event organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and consulting company Apsolon entitled "Challenges and opportunities for the development of SMART tourism in Croatia ”which will be held on October 27 this year, will try to answer this question through panel discussions with representatives of leading tourism companies, institutions and potential SMART destinations.

It is a panel discussion that aims to present the SMARTMED project, the concept of SMART tourism and to detect challenges in the field and in the management of this opportunity through a joint discussion of domestic tourism experts on four topics (sustainability, cooperation and participation, human capital and technology and IT). for the development of a pilot project in Croatia. The event is open to all interested stakeholders in tourism who can apply for participation through the website of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports until October 26.

Tourism in Croatia is waiting for key development years and they will be significantly marked by activities related to the international project SMARTMED in which Croatia, through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has a leading role. It is a project prepared within the PANORAMED initiative, Interreg MED program co-financed by the European Union worth 22.5 million kuna, which connects thirteen partners from nine Mediterranean countries. SMARTMED members together, based on the specific needs of each country, develop a business model for smart and sustainable tourism and innovation in tourism in the Mediterranean.

In their activities, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina jointly develop a business model for SMART tourism, emphasizing sustainable, safe and accessible destinations, digitalization and the use of new technologies in tourism and on the development of human resources and encouraging the cooperation of all stakeholders in tourism and the participation of the local community in decision-making.
