COLUMN: GORAN RIHELJ

As of today, the competition for the ambassador of Croatian tourism is open.

An ambassador of Croatian tourism is a person who is proud of our country, history, customs, culture, heritage, successes - proud to be a Croat. An ambassador of Croatian tourism is a person who promotes his tradition and his region, who respects himself, because if we do not respect ourselves, others will not respect us either.

Anyone can be an ambassador of Croatian tourism, you can also be one.

How? Simply, be proud and promote Croatia, both in private and business communication. Regardless of the state of society lost in the yellow and black chronicle, positive things happen every day, but few notice them. Unfortunately, yellow is always more readable than any positive event. But that is a topic for another blog, let's return to the topic of Croatian tourism ambassadors. Every day there are great positive tourist stories that you can tell your guests, and you can find some of them on the tourist news portal HrTurizam.hr.

When a guest asks you what they can see in your city be prepared to refer them to all the local stories. Tell him a story about your tradition, culture and customs. Recommend him the great tourist stories he can experience in your city or surroundings. Also, in order to be an ambassador of Croatian tourism, you do not have to be a tourist worker. If guests on the street ask you for advice, you can certainly boast of some local tourist stories or at least refer it to the tourist board in the city. Read why it is Mate Rimac Ambassador of Croatian Tourism, and not just because of the fastest and best electric car in the World.

Here is another concrete example…

Eight years ago, I moved from Zagreb to Vinkovci. I know, to most it sounds weird and unusual because migrations in 99% of cases happen in the other direction. I have told this story a thousand times in Vinkovci and everyone is constantly wondering and wondering if I am normal. Everyone moves and strives for Zagreb, and I came to Vinkovci from that "paradise". However, what I discovered in Vinkovci shocked me positively. Vinkovci is a city where people have lived continuously for over 8.300 years, and thus Vinkovci holds the title of the oldest city in Europe. I know I’m already a bit bored with it, but I’m proud to live in the oldest city in Europe and publicly promote it.

Specifically, from the day I learned about this amazing fact in my private and business communication, be it direct face to face or via email and social media, at the end of the conversation I always greet with the message: Greetings from Vinkovci, the oldest city in Europe. Over the course of eight years, I have sent over a thousand emails with greetings from the oldest city in Europe, and when I send another email to the same person I insert another interesting tourist story.

  • Greetings from the city where two Roman emperors were born
  • Greetings from the city where the only river in the world that flows upstream and downstream is located
  • Greetings from the city where Orion was found - the oldest calendar in Europe
  • Greetings from the heart of Šokadija
  • And others …

Complete the extensions at the end of the email with your local stories and be ambassadors of Croatian tourism. I don't know why the same is not used by tourist boards, travel agencies, public institutions and even businessmen themselves? Shouldn't our goal be to promote local tourism, ie a tourist destination, a win-win situation for everyone.

Some may find this banal, but a "nice greeting from the oldest city in Europe" at the end of the email costs nothing. Sure, a greeting at the end of an email is a small thing, but a mosaic is made up of thousands of small details that, when put together, make up a single story.

Anyone can be an ambassador of Croatian tourism, you can also be one.

Be ambassadors of Croatian tourism, tell stories.
