Organized by the Tourist Board of the City of Pag, carriers with info boards and free ashtrays have been installed at two locations on the main city beach Prosika in Pag. This is an excellent project of the Volim Vlašić Association, which was launched in 2018 and has expanded to other destinations.
Cigarette butts are a major environmental and aesthetic problem on the beaches of Pag. As a solution to this problem they were made disposable ashtrays made of biodegradable paper, and the info boards show objects of different materials and the time period for which they should be decomposed. The ashtrays have instructions for easy assembly on them, and after use, the ashtray cigarette butts are thrown into nearby trash cans.
How does the whole thing work? Simple, functional and effective.
They are used in such a way that sand is placed inside, and ashtrays are driven into the sand so that they can stand unhindered. After using the ashtray, it is taken out of the sand, and the sand that is inside comes out through the holes in the ashtray. The ashtrays are thrown into a nearby trash can. Also, as the ashtrays as well as info boards and advertising space, it is possible to close the whole project and the market, if the municipality or city does not see interest in it.
The goals of the project are to reduce the pollution of beaches from cigarette butts and to encourage more responsible behavior of locals, tourists and visitors, preservation of nature and biodiversity through education, information and sensitization of the public. In addition to the city beach in Pag, in cooperation with the association I love Vlašići, new carriers have been installed with free ashtrays and info boards on the beach in Vlašići.
Otherwise, most cigarette butts on beaches unfortunately end up in the sand or in the sea under the influence of low tide and tide. The decomposition of the cigarette butt takes up to 6 months, and the cigarette filter, which is made of a spongy material, absorbs moisture and increases its volume, so it can be more difficult to decompose. It is estimated that its decomposition takes up to 10 years. This is such a simple and effective solution to this problem, that the same principle should be spread all over the coast
Smokers are invited to use free ashtrays and thus contribute to the preservation of nature and the environment on the island of Pag. In addition to Pag, the project was implemented in previous years by the Split-Dalmatia County and the town of Hvar.
If you also want paper ashtrays in your destination and beaches, contact the Association I love Vlasic and join the project.
