"Krka" National Park is proud of its exceptional wealth of birdlife, with as many as 229 species recorded so far, of which 88 are winterers, and the park is an important resting place for migratory birds as well. However, for the first time, a white bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) was found in the Park area, increasing the number of birds in the Park to as many as 230 species.

It is a bird that lives in colder, northern regions such as Iceland, Norway and Russia and can only sometimes be seen in Croatia. Even its wintering grounds are located further north than our region, so its discovery in the locality of Ivoševci, near the Burnum amphitheater, is particularly interesting. A male in winter clothes was spotted thanks to the careful observation of nature guards.

"Protected areas like the Krka National Park are crucial in preserving biodiversity and natural habitats. Every new species that appears in this area, such as the white bunting, confirms the importance of our work in protecting and preserving the environment. This discovery also shows us how proper management and regular monitoring make it possible to preserve not only specific species, but also entire ecosystems that are key to maintaining the balance in nature.", said the director of the Public Institution "Krka National Park" Nella Slavica.

The white bunting is 15 to 18 cm long. It builds its nests in high mountains and rocky northern coasts, and in winter often inhabits open coastal pastures and heaths. She is quite trusting, but restless and active, constantly on the move.

This finding highlights the key role of nature conservationists in monitoring the state of the environment and changes in it. Their dedication and expertise enable habitat conservation and species monitoring in the "Krka" National Park, thus ensuring the future of its rich natural heritage.
