The Secretary General of UNWTO supported the efforts of TZ Zagrebačka County towards sustainable tourism

Zagreb County is the largest county in Croatia with the Green Destinations label.

The UNWTO high delegation supported the efforts of the Zagreb County Tourist Board towards sustainable tourism and congratulated them on the Green Destinations certificate.

Zagreb County was visited by a high delegation from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), led by Zurab Pololikashvili, by the Secretary General of the UNWTO in the presence of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Josip Pavić. The visit to the county was organized by the director of the Tourist Board of Zagreb County, Ivana Alilović, presenting sustainable concepts and efforts that the County invests in realizing the sustainable offer of its destination. 

Let us remind you that the Zagreb County became the largest county in Croatia with the Green Destinations label and thus ranked among the world's top destinations. 

The Tourist Board of Zagreb County emphasized that Green Destinations is a certificate  recognition of continuous efforts and focus on nature conservation. The certificate gives the Zagreb County a strong boost and confirms that it is not only a vacation destination, but also an example of a successful combination of tourism and environmental protection.

Guests visited Korak Winery in Plešivica, where they were introduced to the eno and gastro offer. In the elegant ambience of a restaurant with a Michelin star, UNWTO representatives had the opportunity to enjoy top-quality gastronomy that nurtures local ingredients, but at the same time preserves the environment.

"Zagreb County is not just a destination, but a real experience for all travel lovers who value sustainability. The award of the bronze Green Destinations certificate is only a confirmation of our long-term work in preserving the environment, culture and gastronomic heritage, but we are aware that sustainability is a constant investment in raising awareness and the quality of a sustainable offer, which we are constantly working on", she pointed out Ivana Alilović, director of the Zagreb County Tourist Board. 

The visit of the UNWTO high delegation to Zagreb County emphasizes its role as an example of sustainability in the tourism world, and at the same time it is an additional recognition of the efforts and work of the Tourist Board.

The occasion of the arrival of the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili in Croatia was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) on mutual cooperation and establishment Center for sustainable tourism in Croatia.

The memorandum is the basis for the establishment of a research and development center that will be an independent public institution, and within the framework of the MoU, UN Tourism and the Ministry will cooperate in the implementation of initiatives and projects, with a focus on research and development related to sustainable policies in tourism, promoting sustainable tourism, creating guidelines and recommendations for the development of sustainable tourism, sharing knowledge and best practices for sustainable tourism, as well as transferring knowledge about managing the development of sustainable tourism.

The establishment of the Center is an initiative of the World Tourism Organization, motivated by the recognition of Croatia as a leader of positive changes and innovations in the creation of sustainable tourism policies at the global level. More details in the attachment.
