A joint session of the Board of Directors of the Croatian Tourism Association (HUT) and the Executive Board of HUP - the Association of Hospitality and Tourism was held in Poreč, with the participation of the presidents of the largest Croatian tourism companies. The main topics of the meeting were the course of the tourist season and the key challenges that arise in the implementation.
The current state of occupancy and announcements for the further course of the season by all participants was assessed as very good, with significant differences in occupancy between mostly car destinations in the northern and central part of our coast, and the south as extremely dependent on air transport.
Four topics were highlighted as key challenges in the good implementation of the current season: maintaining a good epidemiological situation in the country, employment of employees in tourism, continued support for job preservation te epidemiological recommendations for the functioning of catering facilities.
Large gatherings could jeopardize the epidemiological situation
The most important condition for any tourist traffic is a favorable epidemiological situation that should be maintained at all costs. “If we manage to maintain a good epidemiological situation, we have a chance to have a great season in the current circumstances. But we see what is happening in other Mediterranean countries, from Portugal, Spain and Greece, and that gives us reason to be more cautious. We know what happened to us last year and we hope we learned something on that case since our season was abruptly interrupted on August 15th. According to the experiences of other Mediterranean countries, it is clear that large gatherings are a source of problems and therefore we urge you to be extremely careful and, if necessary, restrictive, all with the aim of enabling the longest possible tourist season. Another abrupt interruption of the season would bring extremely bad effects with much more severe consequences for the tourism sector than last year.", Says the director of HUT, Veljko Ostojic.
The tourism sector strongly promotes the importance of vaccination
The tourism sector is continuously promoting the importance of vaccinations and hotel employees are vaccinated significantly above the Croatian average, and hoteliers support all Government efforts to vaccinate as many citizens as possible and measures to increase general vaccination are welcome.
"On the other hand, aid for job preservation is crucial for the beginning of the recovery of the sector and quality preparation for the next tourist year, and we expect that their application will continue according to the current model, which has proven to be effective. As employers do not have a direct opportunity to influence the decisions of their workers, we do not see that linking aid to vaccination, ie EU digital COVID certification will lead to a significant increase in vaccination and we hope to continue the dialogue to find more appropriate solutions”States the HUT and adds that they support all the Government's efforts to vaccinate as many citizens as possible, and thus measures to increase general vaccination coverage.
Regarding the issue of labor shortage, it was concluded that the existing system, which is not suitable for a prompt response to labor market movements, should be changed urgently and urgently, while existing epidemiological measures regarding hotel and restaurant work should be changed and adjusted to the current epidemiological situation.
