Travel agencies: achieved the most overnight stays by domestic tourists in Croatia in the last five years

Organized by Croatian travel agencies, most tourists came from Germany.

Compared to previous years, after all travel restrictions, in 2023 more trips were organized by Croatian travel (tourist) agencies.

Last year, we recorded an increase in the number of domestic tourists on multi-day trips organized by Croatian travel agencies

In 2023, Croatian travel agencies organized multi-day trips for 708 thousand domestic tourists. Of these, 412 or 58,2% of domestic tourists traveled in Croatia, and 296 or 41,8% traveled to foreign countries, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CSO).

Achieved the most overnight stays by domestic tourists in Croatia in the last five years

In 2023, organized by Croatian travel agencies, 412 domestic tourists went on multi-day trips to Croatia, and they spent 1,5 million overnight stays. Domestic tourists spent an average of four nights in Croatia.

Compared to 2022, the number of domestic tourists on multi-day trips in Croatia increased by 2,1%, and their overnight stays by 2,8%. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic tourists on multi-day trips in Croatia increased by 8,6%, and their overnight stays by 8,9%.

Domestic tourists traveled the most to Italy in 2023

In 2023, organized by Croatian travel agencies, 296 thousand domestic tourists went on trips to foreign countries, where they spent 1,1 million overnight stays. On trips in foreign countries, they spent an average of four nights. Among foreign countries, domestic tourists traveled the most to Italy (23,7%). Followed by trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina (7,7%), Austria and Slovenia (both 6,4%), Germany (5,5%), France (5,3%), Spain (4,9%), Hungary and the Czech Republic (both 4,1%). Compared to 2022, there were 65,7% more domestic tourists on trips to foreign countries, and on those trips they spent 63,3% more nights. The largest increase in overnight stays by domestic tourists was achieved in distant destinations, such as Japan, Sri Lanka, Australia and China. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic tourists who traveled to foreign countries was 13,2% less, and their overnight stays by 13,5%.

Domestic visitors were on one-day trips mostly in Croatia, and from foreign countries in Austria

In 2023, Croatian travel agencies organized one-day trips for 385 thousand domestic visitors, of which 268 thousand domestic visitors in Croatia and 117 thousand domestic visitors who went on one-day trips to foreign countries. In 2023, compared to 2022, there were 4,6% more domestic visitors on one-day trips in Croatia, while there were 72,9% more on trips to foreign countries. Domestic visitors organized by Croatian travel agencies on one-day trips to foreign countries mostly traveled to Austria (29,1%). Followed by trips to Slovenia (22,7%), Italy (20,6%), Hungary (16,8%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (5,2%) and Serbia (3,8%). In the mentioned countries, in 2023 compared to 2022, there was an increase in the number of domestic visitors, except for one-day trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where there were 27,1% fewer domestic visitors. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic visitors on one-day trips in Croatia increased by 1,6%, while the number of domestic visitors on one-day trips to foreign countries was 16,9% higher.

Traditionally, in the organization of Croatian travel agencies, most tourists came from Germany

In 2023, Croatian travel agencies organized multi-day trips in Croatia for 2,2 million foreign tourists, who spent 13,0 million overnight stays. Foreign tourists organized by Croatian travel agencies in Croatia spent an average of six nights in 2023. Compared to 2022, 3,5% more foreign tourists came to Croatia, who spent 4,7% more nights. Compared to 2019, there were 19,8% fewer foreign tourists and 19,3% fewer overnight stays.

In the structure of overnight stays by foreign tourists who came to Croatia organized by Croatian travel agencies, the most overnight stays were made by tourists from Germany (32,8%). The following are overnight stays by tourists from the United Kingdom (11,0%), Austria (8,0%), Poland (6,8%), the Czech Republic (5,8%), Slovenia (4,0%), Italy (3,8 %), Hungary (3,5%), France (2,8%), the Netherlands (2,7%) and Slovakia (2,6%). Compared to 2022, the number of overnight stays organized by Croatian travel agencies by tourists from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy and Slovakia fell from the mentioned countries. Compared to 2019, only Germany (increase by 2,0%) and Austria (increase by 1,0%) achieved an increase in overnight stays by tourists organized by Croatian travel agencies. Of the total overnight stays of foreign tourists in Croatia in 2023, 848 overnight stays were made on cruises, which is 6,5% of the total overnight stays of foreign tourists. Compared to 2022, foreign tourists achieved an increase in overnight stays on cruises by 40,9%. The most overnight stays on cruises in Croatia in 2023 were achieved by tourists from Germany (220 thousand overnight stays, an increase of 84,1% compared to 2022) and tourists from the United Kingdom (128 thousand overnight stays, an increase of 84,7%).

Tourists on multi-day trips mostly traveled by bus

Regarding the way of organizing transport to the main destination, on multi-day trips in Croatia, domestic tourists mostly traveled by personally organized transport, 59,0% of them, while they mostly traveled to foreign countries by transport organized by travel agencies, 85,5% of them. Considering the type of transport organized by Croatian travel agencies, domestic tourists on multi-day trips to the main destination mostly traveled by bus, 88,9% of them in Croatia, and 62,1% of them on trips to foreign countries. They also traveled to foreign countries by plane, 36,6% of them.

In 2023, domestic tourists in Croatia spent the most nights in hotels

In 2023, domestic tourists spent the most overnight stays in hotels, 965 thousand of them, which is 63,6% of the total overnight stays of domestic tourists in Croatia organized by Croatian travel agencies. Unlike domestic tourists, foreign tourists spent the most nights in rooms, apartments, studio-apartments and holiday homes, where they spent 6,5 million overnight stays, which is 50,1% of the total overnight stays of foreign tourists in Croatia organized by Croatian travel agencies.

By the way, the number of travel agencies and their branches in the Republic of Croatia is 1.484, and they employ a total of 5.569 people in Croatia, of which 4.002 are permanent.
