Plitvice Lakes National Park and Korea's Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation

The two areas under the protection of UNESCO will exchange knowledge and experience on the preservation of these world-famous and fascinating natural areas, visitor management, sustainable tourism, adaptation to climate change and mutual promotion of the parks.

Memorandum of understanding and cooperation between the Plitvice Lakes National Park Public Institution and the Korean protected area under the protection of UNESCO Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes it was signed on December 20, 2023 at the Dubrovnik Hotel in Zagreb.

Memorandum of understanding and cooperation with attendance Igor Kreitmeyer, director of the Directorate for Nature Protection of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, signed Tomislav Kovačević, director of the Plitvice Lakes National Park and Hee-Chan KIM, director of Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.

"The increasing number of tourists visiting our country in a relatively short period of time also leaves a large ecological footprint, and our infrastructure can hardly bear this pressure. That is why we invest efforts in modernizing the infrastructure for visitors, which must be resistant to climatic extremes", Director Kreitmeyer pointed out in his welcoming speech. 

"We create management plans with priorities for the restoration of nature, because it is our ally in the fight against climate change. Protected areas form the backbone of nature conservation. And that's why every activity that contributes to effective management represents an important step forward. The exchange of knowledge and transfer of experiences, partners and friends, who manage world heritage areas is of inestimable importance", he added.

Minister Counselor Joongkeun Oh from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of Croatia invited the Croatian side to a return visit and presentation of the Plitvice Lakes National Park in Korea.

After signing the Memorandum, the delegations visited the National and University Library in Zagreb on the occasion of the exhibition 'Jeju's World Natural Heritage', which is open until December 23. communicated are from the Plitvice Lakes National Park.
