Camp open days - how to make a career in camping?

The Camping Association of Croatia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, launched a project in 2022 called "Development of careers in camping as one of the most attractive and promising segments of sustainable tourism in the Republic of Croatia".

It is a project to educate and bring pupils and students closer to future employers in the tourism, and especially camping, industry, which the Camping Association of Croatia has been working on intensively for many years and thus significantly contributes to strengthening the competitiveness of human resources and the Croatian tourism product in general.

"As part of the aforementioned project, last year and this year, we brought camping closer through guest lectures in high schools and colleges. At the end of last year, a large number of students from Šibenik-Knin County responded to our invitation and participated in the 16th Congress of Croatian camping, and they were particularly impressed by the Round Table on the topic "Workforce in tourism and camping: How to attract and retain employees and motivate young generations to work in tourism?", which emphasized the need to adapt the tourism industry to new generations of future employees", said Adriano Palman, director of the Camping Association of Croatia.

The open days of the camp, which will be held on May 18, 2023, starting at 9:30 a.m., are just a logical continuation of the whole idea of ​​developing a career in camping. The host of the Day will be one of the best Croatian camps, Camp Polari in Rovinj (Maistra dd).

"Camp Polari, Rovinj and Istria in general were not chosen by chance to host the Open Doors Day. It is a Croatian region that is excellently "covered" by camping facilities, it is the leader in Croatia and among the best in Europe. Within the entire Istrian tourism, camping achieves 40%, and if we look at the camping capacities in Croatia as a whole, 52% of them are in Istria", Palman points out. 

The event was designed to intensify cooperation and interaction between employers in tourism and secondary and higher education institutions, as well as the interested general public, since the activity is also intended for unemployed people in order to encourage them to work in tourism, but also for existing tourism workers who aspire to acquiring new knowledge and experiences.

"With the help of our partners on the project, we invited all those who might be interested in a career in camping. Around 130 pupils and students have already been confirmed to come, and interest is increasing as the date of the event approaches.", says Palman.

Representatives of the camp and the human resources department will take the participants on a professional-educational tour in order to gain an insight into the specifics and needs of work in the camp, as well as the organizational structure itself and descriptions of individual jobs. The participants will thus find out first hand what it looks like to work at the reception desk, in the food and beverage, household, horticulture and similar sectors, where they will be able to get answers to all additional questions.

"As part of the project, a separate online section was created as part of the Camping.hr portal, "Camping career development – ​​everything you need to know", all in order to further motivate pupils and students to develop careers in camping and tourism in general, since we are talking about one of the most promising branches of the Croatian economy", said Palman and added that it was a wish this website and in general with the project, pupils and students to be encouraged to write papers on the topic of camping and thus to become more interested in this topic, because our camps are at the very top, as evidenced by numerous awards at the European and world level."
