In the old part of Vodnjan, full of narrow streets, there is probably the narrowest and shortest street in all of Istria. The residents of Vodnjan tell a nice story about her, and it is related to the Austro-Hungarian period.

Around that time, the gendarme caught the thief in the act and a chase began through the streets of the old town. As the thief was fast, he outran the gendarme. In the end, he ran into a small, narrow alley.

Thin and fast, the thief took a few steps out of the alley without any problems. "A little less skinny" gendarme entered the alley and got stuck there, so he never caught the thief. The narrowest street today bears the name Historic center.

The story of the narrowest street is very much loved by the visitors of Vodnjan, which is why the Tourist Board of Vodnjan classified the narrowest street as an attraction that every visitor should see.

There are two ways to get to the narrowest street from the main square, Narodni trga. There is one  through the passage next to the Ecomuseum Istrian de Dignan and the other, right after the end of Trgovačka Street towards the Church of St. James. The street itself is 50 centimeters wide.

These days, the Tourist Board installed additional tourist signage in the center itself to make it easier for its visitors and guests to get to the narrowest street. The signage is in four languages, which is certainly commendable because it is a tourist signage.

The story of the narrowest street got its place in the comic presented by TZ Vodnjan in collaboration with renowned illustrators in 2021, and the characters and the situation from the comic itself can be viewed via the TaleUp application.

"Vodnjan stories" contain a total of six stories and legends, one of which is from Peroj, one from Galižana and four from Vodnjan, and the comic has been translated into foreign languages, Italian, German and English. More information about the comic in the attachment.
