The meat of Turopolska pig became the 45th Croatian product with a protected name in the European Union

"Turopolska pig meat" has received the European protected mark of authenticity, the European Commission announced in the Official Journal of the European Union on October 16, 2023. Thus, this product name was entered in the register of protected marks of origin and protected marks of geographical origin and protected throughout the European Union. The EU mark of the protected mark of origin or the protected mark of geographical origin on the packaging guarantees the consumer the purchase of an authentic product.    

The procedure for protecting the name "Meso Turopoljska svinje" was initiated by the Noble Municipality of Turopoljska, the Section of Turopolska Pig Breeders, which submitted a request for protection of the mark of origin to the Ministry of Agriculture.    

The Turopolj pig originates from the area of ​​Turopolj, and in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, the breeding area of ​​the Turopolj pig expanded from Turopolj towards Sisak and Draganić, and later also to part of Slavonia and Podravina, reaching the borders of Hungary, which made the Turopolj pig the most widespread pig breed in Croatia.

The protection of the product "Turopolska pig meat" is based on the specific quality of the meat, which is the result of the genetic basis and the way the pigs are kept and fed, as well as the age of the pigs at slaughter.

The "meat of the Turopolska pig" is characterized by its darker and redder color, more compact muscle texture and naturally has a higher degree of accumulation of fatty tissue, especially in the subcutaneous part and between the muscles. When consumed, thermally processed meat has an elastic-juicy consistency, full flavor and a specific aroma that is given by the melted meat fats.

The Republic of Croatia now has 45 agricultural and food products whose name is registered in the European Union as a protected designation of origin or a protected designation of geographical origin.
