On the island of Lošinj again this year, on April 1 and 2, 2023, there will be an eco-action cleaning the coast and the sea under the name "The sea knows, the island remembers".

According to current announcements, around three hundred volunteers are expected, of which 130 are divers. Joint forces will clean several locations; the root of the port of Mali Lošinj, the coast from Velopin to Borik (Sunčan uvala), the coast from Feral to Rovenska and the port of Veli Lošinj, the beach of Mirna and the port of Nerezine, as well as the bay of Čikat.

This year, the main goal of the project is to raise public awareness of the problem of waste on the seabed, coast and beaches, as well as to promote sustainable solutions for the preservation of the marine environment. Previous year 2022, a total of three hundred divers, volunteers and citizens joined forces and participated in the two-day eco-action "The sea knows, the island remembers" and removed more than 30 square meters of waste from the Lošinj coast and underwater.

The project is reminiscent of the former self-initiated eco-action of the islanders called "Work". Namely, what today is called "work for the benefit of the community", used to be associated with the privilege of grazing private sheep on communal pasture and using communal puddles, as well as using common (communal) roads.

The cleaning and maintenance actions were organized by the "ancijan" (village elder), who at the same time took care that everyone who needed to respond and do certain jobs. The sanction for unfinished "work" was - shame. By the way, the cleaning of pastures and roads was done in the spring, before Easter, and the puddles were cleaned in the summer, when there was the least amount of water in them.
