Given the late opening of most hotels, camps and resorts and the normalization of operations only in July, tourism workers were unable to work for most of the year and did not achieve the level of income from regular years.

That is why the largest tourist group in Croatia, Valamar Riviera, together with the Trade Union of Istria of Kvarner and Dalmatia and the Trade Union of Tourism and Services of Croatia (STUH) have agreed on the rewards that Valamar will pay to workers in December. In order to compensate its employees for reduced salaries, Valamar will thus pay the 13th salary and additional rewards in the total amount of HRK 5.000 to 7.800 net, which will be received by more than 2.500 employees.

"The payment of the 13th salary is one of the measures initiated by Valamar with the aim of retaining employees in tourism and quality preparation for the next tourist season. This autumn, Valamar will also employ 400 key seasonal employees for an indefinite period of time, which will ensure them a stable income and a year-round job in tourism. Valamar has already launched key employment, remuneration and education programs that will be implemented and further developed during the winter and spring in order to better prepare for the 2022 tourist season. These programs have been strongly supported by the social partners as a precondition for .”They point out from Valamar.

All permanent employees, as well as employees with a year-round contract who are employed on December 1, 2021, will be paid:

- 13th salary in the amount of HRK 5.000,00 net

- Christmas bonus in the amount of HRK 1.800,00 net

- Gift in kind in the amount of HRK 400,00, ie a total of HRK 7.200,00.

- For each child up to the age of 15, a gift in the amount of HRK 600,00 will be paid, and workers who have exercised the right to a jubilee award will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Valamar has started hiring for the 2022 season

Even before the Covid crisis, the tourism sector faced the challenges of hiring quality workers, while the crisis only accelerated the negative trends in employment and work in tourism, and a significant number of people emigrated from Croatia or chose other occupations.

According to the current assessment of the Croatian Tourism Association, if something significant does not change, next year it will missing 35.000 employees in tourism, and every third employee will have to come from other labor markets. That is why Valamar is already starting with selection and employment for 2022, and within the program "Good job at Valamar", it invites all those interested in developing a career in tourism to apply for a job.

"During the crisis, Valamar, with the support of social partners and government measures, preserved all jobs through the "Pause, Restart" program, which this year enabled the realization of a solid tourist season. However, for the further recovery of Croatian tourism, it is crucial to improve working conditions in tourism and increase the attractiveness of tourism occupations.", States Valamar.

Trade Union of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia (SIKD): Workers who are provided with good working conditions are the most loyal workers. And workers who can provide quality, which is the basis of long-term and sustainable tourism business.

The shortage of workers faced by tourism companies has reached its peak this year, as many seasonal workers who due to last year's short season, and due to uncertainty about the start of this tourist season, were forced to look for work either outside Croatia or in other industries, also states from the Trade Unions of Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia.

Also, the SIKD states that it is important to note that Valamar has committed itself not to send workers on hold until 31 December 2021, but will be paid full pay and workers will be hired, and that the employer does not intend to send to wait for workers even in the period from January 1 to March 31, 2022, but will hire them to work, unless market trends and opportunities do not indicate further extraordinary circumstances and inability to meet obligations.

"Valamar went a step further, starting the cycle of hiring 400 seasonal workers for an indefinite period of time at the beginning of November. And this is, in the opinion of SIKD, which has been warning for years that only workers who are provided with good working conditions, ie stable income and year-round employment, are the most loyal workers, who can provide quality, which is the basis of long-term and sustainable tourism business. Only by employment for an indefinite period of time or in permanent jobs, and by concluding contracts for at least 9 months, ie good income, can a sufficient number of workers be ensured, especially quality workers.”They conclude from SIKD.
