The Croatian National Tourist Board has published a promotional video of Slavonia, the motive of which is to promote the destination with the aim of bringing guests to Slavonia. By the way, the first video that is the motive for writing this post has been deleted and a new video has been posted that has a few more frames, but the motive for writing this post still remains the same.

But first watch the video.

Is this really the image of Slavonia we want to present? Where is Slavonia in this video anyway?

Put yourself in the position of a foreign guest, would you come to Slavonia when you watch this video? What does this video represent to a foreign guest? Where's that Wow effect? Where are the emotions, the experience and the story?

From the eye of a Slavonian, we can certainly call this culturocide. I know a hard word, but when you don't put shots of a beggar in the promotional video, which is one of the 13 goods listed on UNESCO list of intangible heritage of mankind, then we can certainly say, to put it mildly, about omission, ignorance, unprofessionalism and disrespect for Slavonia.

What does this video sell? Why are we ashamed of ourselves again? Why don’t we respect or appreciate our culture, history and heritage, on the contrary as if we are ashamed of it. Paradoxically, this is precisely our strongest asset. Let’s be what we are because tourists want to see, experience and taste just that. We do not need a new big idea of our tourism, but finally we have to be and sell what we are - Istrians, Dalmatians, Slavonians, Međimurje, Zagorje, Ličani…. Croats. Let's be what we are - indigenous, authentic and credible! That is the story we have to tell.

Where are the tamburitza players, kulen, brandy, šokci and šokice and the famous Slavonian table? Where are Vinkovačke jeseni, Baranja, Zlatna dolina, the oldest calendar in Europe? Where is the Vučedol Museum and Vinkovci as the cradle of European civilization? Where are the Roads of Golden Threads in Županja? Where is life in the countryside? Or maybe the mighty Danube? Diggers ass? Feel free to continue the series…

If the director wanted the video to look "worldly" with a modern musical background, then he was definitely wrong. Slavonia without tamburitza players is not Slavonia. The video should be autochthonous, authentic and authentically Slavonian. The video must cause that Wow effect, draw you into the story, like and share it, that you simply want to come to Slavonia immediately.

The video is excellently produced, but it has absolutely no promotional value for Slavonia, in fact, it only does damage because it tells the wrong picture. I am disappointed with the attitude towards Slavonia, especially because Slavonia has incredible tourist potential, but I am even more worried about the silence of Slavonians. If we do not act alone in the protection of tradition, culture and heritage, who will do it for us. If you do not respect yourself, others will not respect you either. Where did the famous Đuka Begović disappear in the hearts of Slavonians?

No destination, not even Slavonia, deserves such a promotional video without emotions, soul and story. After more reviews of the video, I have more and more a feeling that the video was made because it was necessary and someone did not give it and did not bother to ask about the basic motives and stories about Slavonia. Was it difficult to ask regional and local tourist boards for advice?

As an example, I highlight the promotional video from the Ultra Europe Festival.

That's it, isn't it? You just want to be a part of that story, to experience it on your own skin, to be on that yacht, you just want to be at the Ultra Europe festival right away. It is a promotional video, which has been viewed over 795.000 times to date

Tourism consists of emotions, experiences and stories. Let's tell stories.
