Scientists from the Institute of Tourism in Zagreb, in collaboration with prof. dr. sc. Vuk Tvrtko Opačić from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, established a new model for calculating index of tourist development of local self-government units.
The main motive for developing the new model stems from the need for quality and precise definition of the level of tourism development of local self-government units as basic territorial units in Croatia, in order to establish an efficient and transparent system that will alleviate current inequalities in tourism development and better valorize its resources. stand out from the Institute of Tourism.
The analysis of tourism development assessment methods took into account a number of other indicators for which data are not available at the local level, but are also used to determine the impact of tourism on space such as the number of seats in restaurants, visits to natural and anthropogenic attractions, tourism revenues and fig.
The tourism development index shows level of tourism development of local self-government units, and a model is being developed that will show the development of tourism at the level of tourist boards in the area and counties.
In addition, the new model provides an opportunity to create a quality analytical and information basis for the implementation of sectoral policy measures in the field of tourism. Namely, the main purpose of the tourism development index is to formulate Croatian tourism policy in such a way as to make maximum use of available resources in all parts of Croatia, while ensuring the sustainability of tourism activities from an ecological, social and economic point of view.
"Given the major changes to tourism development, especially in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic, this model is based on indicators that are exact, transparent and objective and easily accessible to all cities and municipalities in Croatia on an annual basis. Thus, cities and municipalities are enabled to easily monitor changes in the level of tourism development according to each of the indicators, as well as to plan their development.”States the Institute of Tourism.
The basic indicators on which the composite index of tourist development is based are the total number of beds and the number of beds in hotels and similar accommodation facilities, the number of arrivals, the number of nights and the number of employees in accommodation and food preparation and serving.
The indicators were observed in absolute and relative values, and all cities and municipalities were classified into five classes. "The possibilities of applying the tourism development index are very wide, and the two most important are its use as a basis for obtaining support for tourism development and as a criterion for determining the position of a city or municipality in the system of tourist boards at the local level. joining the tourist communities of the area. In this context, the tourism development index can also serve as a reference point in considering the future tourism development strategy of the Republic of Croatia, especially when determining the goals, policies and measures that will be defined for the next planning period.“Pointed out the project manager prof. dr. sc. Zoran Klarić.
The indicators, on which the composite index of tourism development is based, as well as their values can be seen on interactive map.
